I am hoping to build a classroom library with multiple copies of young adult novels that my students will be able to read together in book groups. Students will form groups based on their interest level in a particular book and independently manage the planning of their reading and discussions about that book. The students embrace the independence of making their own choices and the responsibility that being in the group involves. Being part of a book group not only helps to strengthen reading skills, but it gives the students a chance to hear different perspectives, as well as the opportunity to connect with each other and bond over books. Research tells us that reading books help build empathy. The value of reading books about diverse topics and characters, with other students who come from a variety of backgrounds is immeasurable.
