In my classroom, students are allowed to self-select the books they want to read so they can read something that appeals to them. As students begin to study historical fiction they will be in historical fiction book clubs, or groups with other students who are interested in the same book as them. In these book clubs, my students will be engrossed in their study of historical fiction by analyzing characters, setting, themes, and the historical context of the text. To ensure that each student is able to read a book that interests them, I need access to multiple sets of engaging historical fiction texts to form book clubs. When students are able to read books that they are interested in, like Al Capone Does My Shirts, or The Boy Who Dared, they are more invested in their reading and active analysis of the text. With books like these in my library, my students will be able to pick books that are best suited for them and truly enjoy their immersion with historical fiction.
