Many students today are visual learners, so using the TI-84 calculators is an effective way for students to understand the math concepts we are learning in multiple ways. With the TI-84s, students can see what an equations looks like as a graph and table side-by-side! We can quickly explore how changing the numbers in the equation will affect the graph and table. We can compare different types of relationships such as lines versus curves. We can input data we have collected and see in an instant what the data looks like. Why does the visual matter so much? Students can see what is happening and then we can start interpreting and using the data. We go beyond writing the equation or graphing it; we can use it to predict! We can apply our predictions to solve real problems. These concepts lay a foundation for in-depth mathematical reasoning and a strong math foundation opens up many possibilities for student careers. I want students to see math as understandable and usable. The TI-84 will help us do this!
