As North Carolina re-evaluates its state standards in English/Language Arts, it is becoming more and more important to introduce students to complex texts that are engaging challenging guides for writing and storytelling. While the classics aid teachers in this, students should also have access to contemporary texts that explore new concepts. Hugo and Nebula Award winner Binti, by Nnedi Okorafor is a novel that is engaging, challenging and relevant to so many students. A class set of this novella would help students understand a different culture while exploring the genre of Afrofuturism and connecting to a character who is simultaneously an outsider and a survivor.
