I teach 10th grade English in New York. Because of the diverse cultural backgrounds, economic status, and educational histories of my students, they bring a wide range of reading levels and interests to the classroom. We have a high number of first generation American students who are English language learners. The school also provides services for an exceptional number of special education students. This variety of skill and background creates rich discussions. It also creates a difficult environment for investing students in reading.
