Every classroom needs the basics to get started. Sometimes students are unable to provide these materials themselves and it is important they are able to access the lesson to the same extent as the other students. By having a basic supply in the classroom, the students can borrow what they need that day to use during the lesson. Bring the basics to our classroom and equalize education for our 5th graders. Students are currently spending time sharpening their pencils with a manual sharpener borrowed from a friend because the classroom electric sharpener doesn't work. Their time is much better spent if they can just grab an already sharpened pencil and get back to their work. We use cardstock in different projects throughout the year in math, science and art. For example, in math, we make a conversion fan that has all the different unit conversions in one place for the students to use in that chapter. Having the basics in the classroom is a way to show my students that I care about them. By supplying things when they can't afford it or forgot it at home, it makes their lives less stressful and they are better able to focus on their education.
