"Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience." - Rudine Sims Bishop in "Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors" The students I teach come from a wide variety of backgrounds, but unfortunately, my classroom library does not reflect the cultures and reading levels of my students. It’s important for kids to see themselves in the books they read. It’s also important for them to see the experiences of others to build empathy. My students deserve to read texts that reflect their cultures, and they also need more books available to them at their unique reading levels, which is why I have set out to diversify the library in my classroom.
