Students at this technical high school have chosen to come here to excel in a trade. Academics is not always the highlight of every student's day. During shop cycles, students have an extra pull-out English class where they have the opportunity to read any book of their choice! With every student on a different book, it is sometimes hard to keep students on track to meet their goals. This is why I would like to start having literature circles once a quarter. Many of our books in our book room are out of date or used in upper level courses. My goal is to have a solid list of book titles where students can read the same titles as their classmates while engaging in relevant, challenging, and high-interest activities or discussions. Ideally, these books will to generate a positive culture around reading both in and out of the classroom for my students while also teaching them time management and note-taking strategies.
