Independent reading is crucial to grow readers. Wide independent reading allows students to practice the skills and strategies they are learning in the classroom with opportunities for feedback. In addition, it increases vocabulary, stamina, and reading levels. Students who struggle need to read more than their average performing peers to close the gap. However, too often, these students read less and have the most outdated, unmotivating materials. Our intervention periods are 56 minutes. Daily my students read for at least 20 minutes after a 30 minute intervention session. The classroom library is continually updated with high quality literature that interests students due to grants and my classroom budget. We are requesting flexible seating with a rug, twill bedrests and modular seating that will help to increase engagement and stamina for independent reading.
