The Hooked on Phonics materials will be used Monday-Thursday during 2-hour after school tutoring sessions. I am not paid to provide tutoring, but do it because my students need it. Hooked on Phonics will enable my students to use a proven system to increase literacy, and thereby confidence in their ability to learn. Hooked on Phonics is not just an investment in my students education, but in their self-perception and confidence, as well. Generally, schools stop teaching students to read in the 3rd grade and begin to rely on literacy for learning. Because my students are in the 5th grade, it has become increasingly difficult to acquire missing literacy skills. Completing the Hooked on Phonics literacy program, will prepare them to meet grade-level expectations now and in the future. My students may not have received what they needed in the past, but I am determined to do all I can to ensure that they receive what they need to be successful going forward.
