This year, my classroom was moved. I went from an outdoor trailer to an actual classroom inside of a building. Although there was initial excitement about the change, I knew upon walking into this classroom, there would be challenges. The classroom has fluorescent lighting, outdated oak computer desks that are connected and are on wheels, and seats are hard and cold. My initial thought was to add my tough with color, warmth and student work that would make the room more inviting. Although the efforts were not in vain, there is still much work to be done. The biggest challenge I see for my students is the lack of space to move in OUR classroom. I want my kids involved in hands on projects. I want them to read and write while utilizing critical thinking skills. The space is so limited that they barely have room to move through the aisles. I notice the biggest struggle for my students who have an ADHD diagnosis. These students in particular have to constantly redirect themselves to tasks. They want to move and they need to move! The problem is, they logistically cannot. As a saw this problem arise in my classroom, I began the research process. I wanted to figure out the "WHY?" Why are my students so antsy. I took a good, hard look at my classroom environment. Our culture is warm, but the work space is as cold as Buffalo NY on a January moonless night. Next, I began the "HOW" phase. How do I fix it? I began researching solutions, and the evidence was overwhelming. My kids need to move, even as they type, read and write in their seats.
