Kindergarten Spanish Immersion students in Srta. VanDorp's class are learning about animals, their habitats, the foods they eat, and their life cycles. We hope to bring this learning to LIFE in our classroom with our very own class pet hermit crabs. Our pet hermit crabs will help us learn about the responsibilities of pet care, give us opportunities to observe them living in their habitat, offer various writing opportunities integrating our science, math, and language standards, and give us infinite real life connections that books and other media can't provide us alone. We are excited to learn all about what our hermit crabs need to grow and thrive. We want to provide them with a safe and comfortable habitat in our classroom! We already know that hermit crabs need a warm, tropical climate with sand, and other special substrate called coconut fiber to hold in humidity. We have requested a heating pad to help keep our "hermies" warm, plenty of hermit crab food, and terrarium decor like drift wood, coconut shell huts, and moss and other plants to help our crabs feel at home.
