Reading is fundamental to success in education. All day long I work with students who are significantly below grade level in reading, providing intensive reading interventions. Many students have trouble sitting still. This makes it hard for them to focus on their school work. The longer a student goes without mastering basic reading skills, the harder it will be for them to achieve grade level skills. The lack of reading skills filters into every aspect of a student's educational experience. If you can't read the directions, math, social studies and science are more difficult. Many students become frustrated. Their frustration is often expressed through behavioral problems. Eventually, their self-esteem is affected and many just give up. Students who give up don't just cause problems at school, their behaviors spill into the community. When a student can stop fidgeting and focus, they can learn.
