We teach the basic skills of reading through quality mentor texts that we need access to year round. We continuously study a specific text for a period of time so our students really enjoy learning. In second grade students are moving from story books to more chapter books. They need different levels of text to support that transition. I recently went to the Lucy Calkins Institute in New York this past summer and I'm really starting to implement these best practices in the classroom. These lessons require books of certain traits which are added in my shopping cart. In my shopping cart there are picture books, poetry books, and chapter books that will give my students access to the books they need to become better readers. These books are specifically picked to teach the standards
