What is flexible seating, and why is it a good option for my third grade classroom? My hope is to give students a chance to take ownership of their learning environment by turning the classic classroom setup on its head. No more rows and rows of traditional desks and chairs. Flexible seating will provide students with a variety of table types to choose from: high, medium and low, with seating to accommodate. This will give them a choice in where they are most comfortable, allowing for optimal learning. By giving up a little bit of control on my part, I am allowing the students to become responsible for their learning environment.  Students will flow from one style of seating to another with purpose. Choices will include stools, yoga balls, floor pillows, and yes, even a few of the traditional desks and chairs for the students that are more comfortable with conventional seating. The space will look more modern and inviting, and create an interactive learning environment.   Third grade is fun, adventurous and filled with a lot of firsts. It is typically the year when students are introduced to textbooks for the first time.  And there is more: cursive writing, multiplication and division in math, reading chapter books and meeting in groups for book discussion. Possibly the most challenging new aspect is state performance tests. Flexible seating will transform my classroom into a more comfortable, friendly environment.  Physical activity has been proven to boost academic performance.  It’s the philosophy that bodies in motion equate to brains in motion. Flexible seating will help me as an educator ignite a thirst for knowledge in my third graders.  I am excited to see what this freedom of choice can bring.
