Our model skeleton will be a constant reference point for discussions about movement and anatomy, but specifically for the somatic work we are currently practicing. The work deepens the understanding of where movement comes from and helps students build a strong physical consciousness surrounding their bodies and dance technique. Specifically, we talk a lot about anchoring the pelvis, softening the xiphoid process, neutralizing the sacrum and balancing equally on the sit bones. To help students visualize these bones and actions, we will refer to our model skeleton so that students can initiate movement from the right places. Somatics is becoming a more prevalent part of dance education, but is still not found in every institution. To have this program at our school is unique, and will greatly benefit our students' careers as young artists and eventually working professionals.
