The purpose of the calm down area for my special needs classroom is to maintain and control the safety of my students by preventing sensory overload and unwanted behaviors. It will be a place for my students to calm down, cope and regain control of their feelings that can, at times, be overwhelming. The calm down area would include comfortable seating, such as the high back chair as well as the Flex Space chair and the cushions. This will provide a place for the students to comfortably rest and allow their sensory system to calm down. The sensory tools, or fidgets, will help with focus.
