Students learn from experiences. They relate best to the world around them. Not only is outside reading an incentive, but an effective instructional tool that I have used for years. At most inner city schools in New Jersey, the only outside area we have to utilize for outside classroom consists of a slab of pavement. It is essential that students have a place to sit while working and reading outside. We would use the beach chairs for our outside classroom while reading and discussing literature. Life is about different experiences. If we have the ability to utilize the outside classroom, our students will become more well rounded individuals.
