The books that I have chosen are written by poets of color with the intention that my student will read the entire collection. One of my overarching goals in my Language Arts classroom is to expose my students to literature that is relevant to their lives, written by people to whom they can relate. The textbooks provide a variety of texts, but I strive to make poetry accessible and to teach whole collections that offer a different take on some of the predominate narratives that perpetuate throughout time and canonized literature. I want to put the physical collections of poetry and prose into the hands of my students, so that we can actively engage with the texts pushing the students to think critically about the power of language to illustrate a sense of self. Clint Smith and Aimee Nezhukumatathil both challenge the notion of personal identity in America: Smith's perspective is embedded with powerful metaphors and imagery that describes being a Black man in America and Nezhukumatathil's gorgeous work pulls in beautiful illustrations to capture the wonder of the natural world while interweaving her experiences as woman of color. Both are exciting and accessible books that my students will treasure.
