How do you react with someone yells at you? Do you change your behavior to fit what the person requests? My guess would be no. In my classroom, I focus on the positive behaviors as opposed to the negative. Students are rewarded with raffle tickets throughout the class for portraying desired behaviors: talking at the appropriate volume level, following expectations, helping a peer, having a positive attitude about learning etc. Students save these raffle tickets and trade them in for items in a treasure box. This treasure box has candy, healthy snacks, school supplies, craft supplies, passes for the teacher chair or classroom leader among many other trinkets. Each Friday, students complete a behavior reflection before they buy an item with their tickets. We discuss the relation of behavior and maximizing instructional time in a student-friendly way. As a result of this incentive, I see increased positive behaviors and decreased negative student behaviors. I also witness peers holding each other accountable and being good role models to help others earn tickets. Right now I fund this out of pocket. I would love to continue this incentive all year and analyze behavior data and academic achievement to go along with my current grad school research. Any help would be much appreciated so that I can continue to help my students succeed in ELA and reading intervention!
