Last school year, I began having book clubs in my classroom, where students were able to choose books they wanted to read with their reading partner, and then discuss their predictions, thoughts, and ideas with one another. This kept students deeply engaged in their reading and wanting to read more. One of the best things I can hear when it comes to teaching reading is "Are there anymore of these books?" or "Can we read just a little longer?" Finding that, 'just right', book for each student is an adventure and witnessing the excitement they have when they finally come across one is immensely rewarding. Students in my classroom love to read a variety of genres and they love having reading partners, but my school's library doesn't have a large collection of the same books for students to checkout at the same time so they're able to read with one another. Many of us know that the best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. This project will give my students the opportunity to choose books that interest them and stay engaged in their reading by having book club discussions with their partners. My students have already shown an astonishing interest in reading, and this project will only help enrich their literacy skills.
