My students need a class set of Pat Frank's "Alas, Babylon." Students will use the novel to read, discuss, and analyze. Students will use the concepts and themes from the novel to write an argumentative essay regarding morality. The novels will also be used to carry over into other English classes such as AP English Literature and English IV Honors. Our selection of class sets of novels is very limited and teachers are often on a waiting list to use novels with their classes. Increasing the selection with novels from which the students may choose to read will greatly impact their education. Providing high-level texts for students to read will impact their reading level, and it will be reflected in their standardized test scores.
