What is STEM? STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. In a preschool setting, STEM learning may seem out of place, but in actuality STEM promotes learning the way young children learn best. During everyday play, children test their thoughts and ideas through trial and error. The integration of STEM activities to a preschool classroom gives children the opportunity to experiment with a variety of materials to develop critical thinking skills. By using ramps and balls exploration, children will analyze how altering the ramps affects the speed and distance the balls travel. With the create-a-path, children build, test, and reconfigure a variety of pathways on a magnetic design board to determine how fast and make predictions as to where the foam balls will fall. The block play STEM kit uses ramps and balls, along with blocks and links to explore structure, momentum, and gravity. The introduction of the STEM process in the early years exposes children to explorations, inquiry, and building of knowledge which is a processes similar to the engineering method and scientific inquiry. By using stem materials in my classroom, students will achieve higher levels of scientific learning.
