Students tend to have a difficult time fully understanding and visualizing different events in history. While lectures and pictures are all well and good, videos and movies go beyond mere words and can immerse students in the lesson. Sometimes movies and videos are the only ways to really bring to life events that happen fifty or more years in the past. One historical era that I have noticed my students tend to struggle with is the Holocaust. There is nothing that my students can relate that to. Even reading primary documents such as Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl cannot fully allow my students to grasp the horrors of that era. However movies such as Schindler’s List or Boy in the Strip Pajamas, help my student to not just visualize the concept but also apply real-life meanings to the concepts as well. The use of instructional videos in the classroom help students to retain more information, understand difficult concepts easier and make students much more engaged in learning than just regular classroom instruction. I also plan to use the videos to help my students explore not just the past but the present as well. Many of the chosen videos will expose my students to parts of the country they might not have a chance to visit, while also exposing them to ideas and concepts of others from around the country. Videos are also a way to reach students with a variety of learning styles, but especially visual learners. It is my hope that with your generous donations, I will be able to use these videos to help my students more fully understand and emphasize with past events and to help them to develop and appreciation for the uniqueness that is our nations history. Thank you for considering my project.
