Our school is dedicated to maintaining a healthy tropical reef tank for the benefit of young scientists and global citizens. By increasing the volume of our tank and its filtration capacity, we are better simulating a natural ecosystem. Natural ecosystems have the capacity to cleanse the waters in a way that a closed tank system does not. As such, students take on the role of fulfilling ecosystem services to ensure the health of the living community. Through this experience, students learn first hand the many interactions between the biotic and abiotic world, the reality of nutrient cycles, and the fragility of ecosystems in the face of change. Your help in providing us with increased filtration allows us to provide our tank inhabitants with high water quality. High water quality allows our tank to flourish and the diversity of life in our tank to increase. As the complexity of our tank begins to mimic a natural ecosystem, there is less fluctuation in the water parameters, which further demonstrates ecosystem services. These filtration items will be utilized throughout the display tank and the sump/refugium we are building. The Reverse Osmosis Water Filter along with the Reef Salt allows us to provide our tank inhabitants with the nutrients they need and nothing they don't need. That level of control over our water parameters allows us to support the biodiversity and longevity of our system. We thank you so much for your contribution to the learning that is going on at our little New England school. And we thank you for your contribution to the education of young scientists, conservationists, and global citizens!
