My students are first graders,from a variety of countries, most of which are first generation. I have taught many of them for the past two years (kindergarten and first). They are very energetic, positive and have a great love of learning. Our school is a great environment. We have a free after school program that many students attend. The majority of the students come from low-income families. Our students live in a city and school district that is struggling. They do not have a lot, but they appreciate what they do have and what they are given at school. Many of my students did not know English, at the beginning of last year, but are now reading at just about grade level. They are determined to succeed. The families are varied, I have some two-parent and some single parent families, but the one thing that most have in common is that they are working and unable to be at the school very often. They try their hardest to be involved but it can become difficult at times.
