Every student in our school is required to take music classes. All student sing as part of the weekly curriculum, and each grade has an instrument that is being taught. Beginning in the 4th grade, each student begins learning a stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass). While the majority of our students are meeting this challenge and doing quite well, we have a number of student in each grade that are struggling. Their challenges range from physical lack of motor skills, cognitive abilities, even anxiety from doing anything new or different. Every student deserves a chance to be successful! As an alternative to the string orchestra, we want to bring a drumming circle to our curriculum. Drums are more durable and can handle a lot more abuse than a violin. Drumming is therapeutic! It reduces stress, anxiety, and tension, while increasing our ability to focus. It many of the same benefits of orchestra and choir in teaching community and working together as an ensemble, yet is simple enough that even the most challenged students can participate.
