I have long been of the opinion both that a beautiful space is conducive to the learning process, and that empty, blank walls are counterproductive to a similar degree. Fortunately for students of Latin, the Greeks and Romans not only produced some of the most beautiful buildings and sculptures ever created, but also inspired artists centuries later to paint beautiful canvasses with Classical themes. At the moment I fear my walls are a source of depression, rather than of inspiration. It is for that reason that I would like to acquire posters that offer glimpses into the world of the Greeks and Romans. At an advanced enough level, the dictionary in the back of the Latin textbook becomes insufficient, and students must venture into the expansive verbal territory of a separate stand-alone Latin dictionary. This book need not be a vade mecum, as the students already have a sizable burden of books and materials to keep track of and haul from class to class and from school to home. A bookshelf that could hold a classroom set of Latin dictionaries would be enormously useful, allowing as it would the students to grab one at the beginning of class and return it to the shelf afterwards. In addition to dictionaries, my advanced students would derive very much utility from various books that will help elucidate the mysteries of the works of Virgil and Caesar, the ones on the AP curriculum. They currently enjoy little more than a printed copy of the "Aeneid," devoid of any notes or commentary.
