Children take great pleasure in listening to stories! Stories on CD that come with a book, are valuable because the child can follow along as the narrator reads. Hearing the book read helps the child to see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. The child is able to focus on the sounds of the words without interruption which provides a model of fluent reading. At the kindergarten level, listening skills are an important part of communication skills. Listening has three parts to it: hearing the speaker, understanding what the speaker is saying, and making a judgment based on that understanding. With a set of headphones and CD set with books, my children will be provided with an opportunity for their listening skills to be improved which is a skill that must be mastered in order to learn to read.
