Books are an essential part of learning in the classroom. Nonfiction books provide students with opportunities to read more about topics that interest them, research and record new information, and answer questions that they have about the world around them. Fiction texts allow students to enter a fantastic place they can’t actually visit in the real world. In 4th grade, students are starting to understand the power of conversations around books. They share books with friends, converse around classroom read alouds, and feel emotions of the characters and of each other. In order to provide purposeful book clubs for my students, I need engaging books that they can read and discuss with other classmates. This project will provide my students with different fiction and nonfiction texts they can discover in the classroom library. It will also allow students to read books at the same time as their classmates, since there will be multiple copies in the classroom. This will also help to get book clubs started at the beginning of the year and lead to readers who converse around books throughout their lives.
