With technology being the center of everything these days, it can be hard for students to succeed when what they need is not readily available on a daily basis. We live in a very small community and I teach 7th and 8th grade math at a small school that serves students as young as Pre-K up to 8th grade. I try every day to make math important to my students so that they can see how it affects their lives daily. One way of doing this is to bring real-world problems to the classroom. Using technology is the best way to do this. Currently, our school has to share 10-15 iPads. Teachers must sign up when they need them and return them as soon as possible. Even when I am able to do this, my students may not be able to each have an iPad. With a few more one-to-to one devices in my room, it will allow more students to have their own device. They will be able to play games, conduct research (i.e. look up the rise in the cost of gas from one year to the next to calculate percent of change), and use online math manipulatives or videos. This will also be helpful when I complete my "Real Life" unit at the end of the year where students must choose a job and budget their paycheck. Students that are bankers can use a Chromebook to input deposits and withdrawals. Also when students research housing and "shop" for a car, they can use the Chromebooks to calculate payments. Any number of devices will allow for more opportunities for students to complete these activities!
