Too often I found myself having to search for books that my students can relate to. As an educator, it is important to me that my students are able to see people that look like them represented in and throughout the literature that they read. When we read about scientists and politicians, I want my students to be able to see through mirrors and windows as they read. When their own ethnicity, religion, culture, gender, and etc. are represented in the books they read, it helps them to easily identify and interact with the text. On top of that, it is also just as important for children to be exposed to other races and cultures. Seeing the world from another perspective fosters understanding and empathy to better understand others. It gives students the opportunity to imagine themselves being in someone else’s shoes. By obtaining these books for our classroom, it will help my students to feel even more empowered and inspired.
