What better way to discover the secrets of the world around us, and our place in that world, than through a great piece of reading or writing! My students crave opportunities for active learning and exploration in Reading Language Arts. Too often reading instruction is confined to handouts and worksheets - No more!! As a class we will move towards active learning opportunities to increase engagement and excitement around learning with the help of a document camera and a Breakout EDU kit. Students need to see good writing to become good writers. In our classroom, each writing lesson begins with a new skill or strategy that I model for students. In the past I have modeled writing on the whiteboard or on a poster. This is often difficult for students to see. Having a document camera in our classroom will allow students to see me writing in real time and will provide opportunities for them to see that writers make mistakes, cross things off, add new details, and sometimes scrap a piece of writing entirely and start over. Seeing this in real time will boost student confidence and help them see that they too have the makings to be a great writer! A Breakout EDU Kit will give students a chance to use what they've learned in Reading to solve challenging puzzles. Students will apply knowledge in figurative language, idioms, poetry, and many other areas to work as a team to open a locked box. Best of all, the Breakout EDU Kit will encourage students to persist after failure, teaching the value of grit and determination.
