The students in our classrooms do not always have access to books at home, and may not be able to access the library outside of school. Without a school library to choose from, it becomes difficult for many of our students to have access to independent reading books for class projects. Our students are incredibly diverse, and need books with characters and authors that reflect their heritage and ethnic backgrounds. Our students crave characters that look and sound like them. They love to learn about other cultures through the books on my shelf. They have specifically asked for more books with characters that reflect who they are, making it easier to relate and to engage with their book of choice!
