One of the most difficult parts of high school science is leaving the visible, tangible world behind and diving into microscopic and molecular levels of reality - strange new worlds! In biology, my students can watch animations and videos of the workings of DNA and protein, but these are just so many images on a screen, until they pick up a 3-D model and put together the "rules" that govern DNA base-pairing and protein folding for themselves. In chemistry, 3-D modeling is also vital for students to get a grip, so to speak, on the invisible organization and interactions of all matter. The Student Molecular Model Set, and the Amino Acid Starter Kit for my biology students in particular, will allow them to build molecular structures and model their interactions and functions in 3-dimensional space - which is how molecules are in reality. Being able to construct a model that can be manipulated and not just looked at opens up my students' understanding to concepts that can be too abstract otherwise. They play a bigger role in constructing their own knowledge rather than receiving it passively. The models help them generate and investigate their own questions - in short, instead of just memorizing facts, they get to DO science!
