The NDHS Drumline class consists of 36 students. The goal is to have as many participants in class as possible. Most of the students are at the beginning stages of percussion technique development so we spend a lot of time practicing rudiments and doing technique exercises. These exercises are difficult to perform with a class of this size all on drums and practice pads get expensive. The chop-out sticks are more cost effective, space saving option for students who have little to no extra funds to purchase their own equipment for the class. These sticks will help my students become more successful drummers as we work toward participating in events outside or school or even our city. The students of North Division High School are caught in a vicious cycle of urban poverty. Individuals who experience the dynamics of poverty have a much more difficult time of achieving success than their non-poverty counterparts. The neighborhoods in which many of our students live our ravaged with drugs, violence, and homelessness. When students participate in events such as this project, they are removed from the "street" environment. They are able to experience areas that they would have never thought imaginable. It is hypothesized that this will help students gain a better understanding of self-respect, a better appreciation for the community around them, and a better appreciation for the importance of education in their lives. Our staff mission for this group is to get our students involved in as many events as possible throughout the school year and within the United States.
