I teach exceptional learners in a Special Day Class at McClymonds High School in West Oakland. My students are bright, ambitious, and looking forward to life after high school. Being in "special ed" classes has been difficult for our learners. Many students feel stigmatized by the label and they worry that they are not as smart or as capable as their peers. This has negatively impacted the process of learning new skills and developing strategies to overcome challenges. It is imperative that my students recognize their talents, focus on their strengths, and learn appropriate strategies to eliminate or work around any barriers that may interfere with success. My goal is to provide as many opportunities as possible for my students to experience success, in the classroom and beyond.
