Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and focus. When students are able to choose where they sit, they are more comfortable and motivated, meaning they will be less likely to be off task. Allowing them to make these choices is key to their success. However, we currently have limited options for seating, and students are having to make do with side tables, standing tables, and two "rocker chairs" that were kindly donated by another teacher. However, these chairs are not in the best condition, and students are creating wait-lists since there are only two. Having more seating options would allow all my students to feel as though they have the options to make the best choices for themselves, and that they have authority over their learning. My students will be more actively engaged in their work and less disruptive with their classmates when they have more options for seating. The seating options that I have selected are versatile and will allow students to take advantage of the full classroom space. The plush pet beds will make it possible for students to make work spaces out of previously useless spaces, such as under desks and open floor spaces. These seats will also allow for more comfort during our Writers Workshop, where students will gather on the floor for discussions. The Big Joe bean bag chair will be added to the list of coveted seats in our classroom, and will allow for more students to be able to enjoy these luxuries.
