I am always thrilled to see how much my students love choosing their independent reading books and thankfully, our schedule allows time for reading every day. While I cherish the independent reading experience, I believe that my students would also be positively affected by reading a class book together. I have found that the right book with the right group can provide a richness only experienced from the communal reading of the the same text. The Outsiders is always a favorite, no matter the background of the student. The themes are relatable; the characters memorable. Do we ever forget Johnny’s last words: “‘Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold . . .’”?
