"Converting public spaces like libraries into more active places is one way to stave off health problems in youth and improve their brain function," said Dr. James Levine, co-director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions. My goal is for our media center to be the place where our students can come to meet their health and academic needs through "reading and riding." Students will use the cycling desks to read, write, and research. Every student will have an opportunity to use the bikes to improve their memory recall which will enable them to tackle more complex tasks. The cycling desks will be housed in the commons area of our media center and will be available to all students during the school day. Making connections between physical activity and brain function will help students experience success in and out of the classroom. As a media specialist, I know that reading is the fundamental core of all content areas. By providing our students this opportunity, they will strengthen both their reading skills and physical health and will be better equipped for their future.
