Many of my students have little to no exposure to balancing budgets in the real world. I hope to provide my students with real-world, hands-on experience for their personal and financial literacy unit. This unit applies many of the skills they learn in preceding units. To begin with, students will play The Game of Life to give them some experience with deciding to go to college or work, deciding on a career based on education, understanding the pay for different careers, and deciding how to spend their salary. My students will use the play money to "purchase" various items within the classroom given a budget and bills that will also need to be paid. They will visit various stations to pay bills, such as rent, utilities, internet, and cable, and to purchase items, such as groceries and clothing. They will have to take into account any taxes and fees that may be added and calculate any discounts that need to be applied using the calculators. This will all lead to the final project for the unit. Students will choose their real-life "Game of Life" path. If they choose college, they must find a school and major then look at scholarships, loans, and grants. They will create a budget based on room, board, textbook costs, and other costs. If they choose to work, they will find a job, calculate their monthly income with taxes and Social Security withdrawn, find an apartment, choose an electricity provider, and create a budget. They will present this information on a poster or PowerPoint. They will use the printer, ink, and paper to print items for their projects. They will use the paper, pencils, markers, scissors, and glue to creatively display their information. I hope this research and knowledge will prepare them for future success.
