A ten frame is a two-by-five rectangular frame which counters are placed in to demonstrate numbers less than or equal to 10. Counters can be arranged in different ways to represent different numbers, which visually help students develop strong number sense. Strong number sense is necessary for student success in mathematics at all grade levels. Understanding that numbers are composed of tens and ones is an important foundational concept, setting the stage for work with larger numbers. A strong sense of "ten" is a prerequisite for place value understanding and mental calculations. I want my students to truly understand their numbers, not just be better counters. Once students understand the concept of 10, a double ten frame can be used to develop numbers 11 through 20. These magnetic ten frames will help students more than just a paper ten frame with counters. Since the counters are magnetic, students can hold up their ten frames for a quick check from me. We also won't spend a lot of time picking up counters from the floor since these stick to the frame!
