My students need three each of 13 financial literacy books, including Do I Need It? or Do I Want It: Making Budget Choices, Shanti Saves Her Money and Kyle Keeps Track of Cash, all to help them learn the principals of saving, spending, supply, demand, and trade-offs. We are involved in the Junior Achievement project BizTown. During this unit, the students learn about saving and earning money by applying for and working a simulated job. With that money they can choose how to spend it during their break at work. Students will learn how to deposit their paychecks, write checks, and manage their checkbooks, as well as learn different aspects of running a business with their classmates. All of this information is new to the students and we need to use as many resources as possible to help them understand these money management principals. We teach this unit because financial literacy is one of the most important aspects of everyone's daily life. We see many of our students' families struggle with finances and we want our students to achieve higher and not fall into poverty as well for lack of training.
