Each of my students has a passion for creating and making different art projects. My students often finish their work early and strive to express their creativity through drawings, writing, reading, and even inventing. As I watch my students use their creativity during times like recess and lunch, I often think of how many artists, authors, scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians are sitting in my classroom every day. For example, some students will become artists by using the art supplies to create unique pictures, sculptures, and art pieces. In addition, some students will become engineers by creating paper airplanes and using Knex and Legos to create different items. In class, I would like to provide students a "maker space" in order to provide opportunities to use their creativity. Having these materials available to students will contribute a love of learning and creativity to the classroom. When speaking to my students, I learned that my students have requested to have an opportunity to be creative. With this maker space, my students and I are designing our learning environment together. We also strongly believe that making, creating, and STEAM is important in education. The maker space will play many roles in the classroom for the students. I am requesting two types of items that provide my students the opportunity to engage in STEAM activities: art materials and science building items. Students will be able to use the art materials in order to create different art pieces, creations, and projects. These materials include but are not limited to class sets of crayons, colored pencils, markers, pipe cleaners, glue sticks, rubber bands, and craft sticks. In addition, I am also striving to provide science manipulatives such as Legos and K'nex kits in order for students to have the opportunity to create their own inventions.
