My students are hungry for current events in their lives. They love learning about the interesting things that are going on in our world. Scholastic Weekly Readers allow my students to immerse themselves in a variety of different articles relating to every day occurrences that they otherwise might not have been exposed to. Scholastic has a read-aloud feature which has proven to be very important and effective with my diverse bunch of readers. This feature evens the playing field for some of my readers that couldn't otherwise enjoy these texts independently. In our classroom library we have a variety of fictional texts, but not as much nonfiction; these magazines would help to even that disparity and also help my students build their knowledge base in current events.
