One thing that students struggle with in understanding math is understanding the "why" and "how"of different math structures and concepts. My students will use these items to help take their concrete thinking to abstract thinking. By letting the students explore with these tools and make their own mathematical connections, they are more apt to retain the information and be an active participant in their learning. One of the items we need are ten frame dice. We will use these to roll and make a ten to add/subtract. By using these dice the students will be able to have a concrete model of their thinking before using numbers and equations on paper. Another item that is needed is cardstock and storage containers. The students are more motivated when they have the ability to choose what they can learn. I will use the colored cardstock to differentiate the activities to meet the needs of all learners. I will use the storage containers to store the different activities the students can choose to work on. We will be using the 120 Pocket Chart every day. One of our math standards is to count forward and backward by any number to 120 by 1s, 2s, 5, sand 10s. This pocket chart will help my students practice this skill. These items will also allow me to differentiate my math lessons and centers to include all students no matter what their learning need is. I will be able to accommodate goals listed in Individualized Learning Plans, as well as, English Language Learning plans. These are great hands activities that will allow students who are not fluent in English to explain their learning and enhance their vocabulary through math games .
