My at-risk students often have 5 or more Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's). These students have been traumatized throughout most of their lives, so of course getting any school work done in traditional desks and rows underneath UV lighting is far less important to them when they are daily worrying about their basic needs. We try to meet our students where they are "at," while also giving our best to help them feel safe and comfortable. As a result, our small school becomes like a family to them--the only consistent thing that many of them have. So they need a different experience than they've ever had at any other school so that they can graduate. However, my room has outdated furniture and as a new teacher at this school I want to give them better if I can. This is why I am requesting funds so that I can create what is called a trauma informed environment.
