High-Lo books offer highly engaging at a low reading level for my struggling readers. These books can help build reading fluency, vocabulary, background knowledge, and interest in reading. I have a 8th grade student who read one of this type of book (Black Out by Anne Schraff). He came to me the very next day and excitedly said, "that's the first time I read a book that I understood!" ESOL and SPED students visit my classroom seeking a book they can read. These books will help build reading skills, self esteem and confidence in which they desperately need to become productive citizens of our nation.
