Students read choice material at the start of English class each day. They are encouraged to find novels that inspire them ,and that they can connect to their own life. Our focus in English has been on annotating texts, with a specific focus on making connections to the world, other material they have read, and to themselves. Our next unit of study will be centered on the theme of "overcoming obstacles." Students will choose from a set of four books to read during this unit. They will be annotating these texts, and working on a variety of English skills and reading strategies. These are in accordance with our SOL pacing guide in literature circles, organized by the books they choose to read. After students have finished reading and discussing these books, they will be writing a memoir about an obstacle or challenge they have overcome in their own life. Most of these books are memoirs or based on true stories. We will take these essays "to publication" through peer editing, revisions, and teacher feedback. Finally, we will be incorporating coding in the English classroom as the students will be building a video game through Scratch that will tell the story of the obstacle or challenge they wrote about in their memoir. They will then have their classmates play the games. Students will also be designing a logo using coding software online for the title of their memoir. This project will incorporate 21st century skills through the use of collaboration (during the peer editing process), communication (in the form of a written memoir), and critical thinking (as they build their video game).
