My classroom is set up for cooperative learning. That means students sit in groups of four at round tables. Students have no desks which means there is nowhere to store many of the daily materials that are needed such as pencils, crayons, reading books, journals, etc. First graders need assistance staying organized which helps with routines, procedures and classroom management. Last year I purchased some on my own from Dollar Tree. Guess what? They didn't last long. However, I found that it was a great way for them to keep their supplies without me having to pass them out and collect them each day as needed. Students enjoyed having them as well. You should have seen their faces as these pockets began to unravel and pencils fell through holes. They were so disappointed and wanted them stapled. I would like each child to have a place to store their own materials which will hep them become more independent learners.
